Toddlers and preschoolers experience huge emotions in their small bodies, and they often don’t have the words to explain what’s happening inside. SEL gives them that language. Instead of a tantrum born of pure frustration, a child might learn to say, “I’m mad because he took my toy.” This simple act of naming the feeling is a huge step toward managing it. We help children identify their emotions and practice strategies like taking deep belly breaths or finding a cozy corner to calm down.
